Abstract:

To provide a picture display device of which the luminance distribution with respect to the angle of view can be improved or of which the luminance can be increased.

The picture display device 1 is provided with an illumination device 100, a liquid crystal display element 304, a driving means changing the transmissivity of the liquid crystal display element 304 in accordance with a picture signal. When the liquid crystal display element 304 is totally in white display, transmissivity changes to possess a maximum value in the angle of view except for the vicinity of zero degree with respect to the change of the angle of view in the prescribed direction of a picture. In the illumination device 100, the intensity of light emitted in the direction of the angle of view near zero angle is larger than the intensity of light emitted in the direction of the angle of view, which has the maximum value.
