Abstract:

To provide a high-efficiency compact illumination optical system capable of making the solid angle of luminous flux made incident on a rod integrator small without lowering illumination efficiency to a compact display panel.

The illumination optical system is equipped with a luminous flux splitter 30 provided between a light source part and the integrator and having a 1st optical device 31 and a 2nd optical device 32. The 1st optical device 31 is provided between the converging point of converged light 71 and the 2nd optical device 32, and has an inclined surface 313 provided on an exit side, which splits the luminous flux 72 made incident from an entrance side to transmitted light whose spread angle is small and reflected light whose spread angle is large, and a reflection surface 312 provided on the entrance side, which reflects the received reflected light as the luminous flux whose spread angle is small toward the inclined surface 313. The 2nd optical device 32 has an inclined surface arranged at a position where emitted light from the inclined surface 313 of the 1st optical device 31 on the exit side is made incident through a minute air gap 33 and a plane part 321 provided at a position opposed to the incident surface of the integrator.
