Title:
ILLUMINATOR FOR REFLECTIVE DISPLAY
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2015207564
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator or the like for a reflective display capable of substantially uniformly illuminating a display in a low ambient light environment.SOLUTION: The illuminator for a reflective display incorporates a light guide having substantially transparent front and rear planar surfaces. The planar surfaces overlap a viewing surface of the display when the surfaces are substantially parallel and adjacent to the viewing surface. A light source emits light into the light guide. A plurality of light redirecting structures are distributed on the rear surface of the light guide. The light redirecting structures are shaped to redirect, through the light guide toward the viewing surface, light rays encountering the structures. Most of the light rays emitted into the light guide by the light source and not encountering any of the structures are confined within the light guide by total internal reflection. Most of the light rays emitted into the light guide by the light source and encountering any of the structures are redirected through the light guide toward the viewing surface, and substantially uniformly illuminate the display in a low ambient light environment.
