Abstract:

To provide an image coding method for adopting motion compensation with high accuracy so as to attain high coding efficiency.

An image coder 100 employing a motion detection and motion compensation method detects the reference region of a picture or two or more reference picture positions to determine a motion compensation mode with the highest coding efficiency among a plurality of reference picture objects of a plurality of reference pictures. That is, in the case of using a picture (reference picture) obtained from one or more coded pictures to code a picture not coded yet, a prescribed method A for determining the number of the reference pictures and pictures to which the reference pictures belong does not take into account whether or not the pictures to which the reference pictures belong are identical to each other, when there are two or more reference pictures.
