To provide an image correction apparatus and a video display apparatus capable of reducing unnaturalness of display on a vision on the basis of a difference of a color reproduction range between an imaging system and a display system while effectively utilizing the wide reproduction color range of the display system.
The image correction apparatus does not uniformly compress the wide color reproduction rang of the display system independently of an input image but calculates an unnaturalness coefficient being an index of unnaturalness on the vision as a correction coefficient dynamically in response to the input image. The image correction apparatus determines a hue range likely to be seen unnatural as a particular hue range and calculates the unnaturalness coefficient on the basis of at least one of the saturation of image parts with hues within the particular hue range, a rate of the image parts shared in the whole image, and the luminance of the image parts. Further, the image correction apparatus concentratingly corrects the image parts likely to be seen unnatural while suppressing lower a color correction amount of the image parts unlikely to be seen unnatural.
