A digital image recorder 2 in the image data communication system 1 picks up a desired still picture or moving picture, compresses a color still picture in compliance with, for example, the JPEG to obtain image data with a data quantity able to be processed by a cellular phone 9 or an information portable terminal 10 as a color GIF(Graphics Interchange Format) file. An image sender transfers the image data obtained by the digital image recorder 2 to an image distribution server 7. The image distribution server 7 records the image data in its internal recorder and transmits an electronic mail or the like to the cellular phone 9 or the information portable terminal 10 so as to inform a recipient that the distribution of an image is possible.
