PURPOSE: To provide the image pickup/display device adopting a decoding system of a color signal in which a contour is sharply reproduced even when number of picture elements of a color LCD is less than number of picture elements of a color CCD.
CONSTITUTION: An output signal 1 of a color CCD is outputted as a color signal in the order of ER, EG, EB, ER,... at a pulse interval of τ0=1/fK, where fK is a clock frequency of the CCD. The output signal 1 of the color CCD is fed to a gate circuit 7, which gates the signal 1 based on a gate pulse 6 at a pulse interval of 1/2fK. The signals ER, EG, EB, ER,... of the gate circuit 7 are outputted in this order and fed to a delay circvmit 8 whose delay time is τ0 and an adder circuit 9. The adder circuit 9 adds outputs of the gate circuit 7 and the delay circuit 8 to obtain a sum output. The sum output is a drive signal for a color LCD 10 in which a picture element number of the color LCD is a half of the picture element number of the color CCD in the horizontal direction and outputted in the order of ER, EG, EB, ER,... then the synthesis signal as to each of three primary colors R,G,B has one to one correspondence to picture elements of the color LCD and a sharp contour is obtained.
