Abstract:
A image display device is provided that displays a stereoscopic image based on a parallax barrier method. The image display device includes a plurality of display elements disposed in an image display surface of a transmission type, a plurality of illumination disposition control elements disposed on an illumination disposition surface that allows variable control of the disposition of illumination light radiated to the image display surface with respect to the image display surface, and a control unit configured to control the display elements and control the illumination disposition control elements. The control unit includes a position information acquisition unit configured to acquire position information indicating an observer distance, a division number calculation unit configured to calculate the number of divisions of each of a left image region and a right image region out of the image display surface, based on the observer distance, an image display surface control unit configured to change the number of divisions, and an illumination disposition surface control unit configured to change the disposition of each of a barrier region and a slit region out of the illumination disposition surface, based on the number of divisions, while maintaining a width of the slit region to be a width before the number of divisions is changed.
