Abstract:

To prevent degradation of an electron emission characteristic caused by increase of a work function due to deposit on an upper electrode, in an image display device having an array of thin-film electron sources each having a lower electrode, an upper electrode, and an electron acceleration layer comprising an insulating material and a semiconductor between them, and emitting electrons from the upper electrode, and a phosphor screen.

Elements belonging to a group 8 or a group Ib, or a laminated film or an alloy film of them are used for a constituent of the upper electrode of the thin-film electron source, and the quantity of an S content or the like adhering to the upper electrode is set not larger than 20 mol% of the total of the elements used for the upper electrode in terms of element.
