The image display device includes an image signal processing section which subjects an input image signal to scaling processing and outputs the converted image signal, and an image contour correction section which emphasizes the contour of the image based on the image signal outputted from the image signal processing section. The image contour correction section enphasizes the contour by selecting the coefficients (k), (m), (j) indicating the degree of emphasis based on the luminance value information within a prescribed area spreading in both horizontal and vertical directions around one pixel ((n), (m)) constituting a display element. Such information includes the difference between the weighted average value of the luminance value within the prescribed area and the luminance value of the pixel, the difference between the maximum value and minimum value of the luminance value within the prescribed area and the difference between the average value of the luminance value over the entire part of the screen and the average value of the luminance value within the prescribed area.
