To provide an image forming apparatus and a method for forming an image that can adequately and stably form fine dots for forming a highlight image when thermal transfer recording by an area coverage gradation using a thermal transfer recording medium (an ink ribbon) in a type represented by a thermofusible transfer type except a sublimation transfer type.
This image forming apparatus utilizes the thermal transfer recording medium in a type represented by the thermofusible transfer type except the sublimation transfer type and performs the image forming wherein an image for the thermal transfer recording is written into a medium to be recorded by the thermal transfer recording whereby ink is selectively transferred by controlling the heating of a thermal head. The thermal transfer recording is executed to the medium to be recorded in a condition that a tension is applied to the thermal transfer recording medium and a support body is extended.
