In an image forming apparatus, a CPU 3b in a fixing device 4 controls so that a roller 4d is changed from in a state having pressure applied to in a state having no pressure applied, when an earthquake detection device 4a detects an earthquake, and controls to instruct a roller drive device 4c to return a roller-through unit, when a roller state detection device 4e detects the application of pressure to the roller 4d. Further, the CPU 4b determines success/failure of the apparatus in printing on the basis of a drive status of the roller drive device 4c, and controls to return the roller-through unit during the printing. Further, the CPU 4b stops a print job when an earthquake is detected during printing. A controller 1 allows a display unit of an operation unit 3 to display a fact that a jam detection device 4f has detected the occurence of a paper jam through an engine control unit 2 and a fact that the roller state detection device 4e has detected the retracting of the roller-through unit, and restarts the apparatus when the paper jam is eliminated.
