To provide an image forming apparatus which is excellent in controllability of a charged potential, and reduced in size and cost, regardless of linear speed of an image carrier, and maintains a stable charging function for a long period.
The image forming apparatus is provided with: an image carrier 40; electrifying devices 70, 76 and 77 which include a casing 71, a grid 75, a plurality of discharge electrodes 73 and 74, and a plurality of high voltage power supplies 76 and 77 individually outputting/stopping high voltage, in which each of the plurality of discharge electrodes is connected to each of the high voltage power supplies so as to charge the image carrier; an exposing means 21 for irradiating a charging surface of the image carrier with light and forming an electrostatic latent image; a developing means 60 for developing the electrostatic latent image and forming a toner image; a transferring means 10, 11 and 22 for transferring the toner image onto a sheet; and a control means 90 for controlling each output/stop of the high voltage to the discharge electrodes by the plurality of high voltage power supplies, and for switching the number of the discharge electrodes used for charging the image carrier into a large number when a moving speed of the image carrier is high and into a small number when it is low.
