To provide an image forming apparatus which can further reduce power consumption while maintaining the condition enabling a communication even in a sleep mode.
The image forming apparatus includes a NIC section 300 which performs the communication between it and PC 317, etc. through a communication network, a usual power supply mode, and a power supply section 306 which supplies a power to the NIC section 300 and changes the power supply mode between the section and the sleep mode with which the power is not supplied to the image forming apparatus 40. The NIC section 300 includes a protocol recognition section 315 for recognizing the protocol concerning received data, a memory section 316 for storing beforehand the predetermined correspondence between the type of the protocol which can be recognized by the protocol recognition section 315 and the type of the power supply mode, and an operational-command-signal output section 314 which outputs an operational-command-signal for making the power supply section 301 operate to the power supply section 301 with the power supply mode which is matched with the type of the protocol concerning the received data.
