To provide an image forming apparatus that controls characteristics and a dispersion state of a release agent used in a toner to improve offset resistance and to obtain good fixing property, suppresses a volatile component of the release agent generating from a fixing unit to prevent contamination in a machine or the occurrence of image degradation, and provides stable images for a long period of time.
The image forming apparatus includes: an image carrier; a charging means charging the surface of the image carrier; an exposing means writing a latent image by exposing the image carrier; a developing means including a toner and developing the latent image written on the image carrier with the toner to form a visible image; a transfer means transferring the visible image to a recording medium directly or via an intermediate transfer member; a fixing means fixing the image transferred to the recording medium; and a cleaning means cleaning a transfer residue toner on the image carrier, which is not transferred. The fixing means has a nip time of 30 to 70 msec. The toner is an electrophotographic toner containing at least a binder resin, a colorant, a release agent and an additive, wherein the release agent material shows a loss on heat of 0.5 to 2.0% when the release agent is left to stand at 165°C for 10 minutes. In the FTIR-ATR (Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflection) spectroscopy of the toner, the intensity ratio P (P2850/P828) of an absorption spectral peak (at 2850 cm-1) derived from the release agent to an absorption spectral peak (at 828 cm-1) derived from the binder resin satisfies 0.03≤P≤0.25. The heat of melting derived from the release agent, measured by DSC, ranges from 2 to 25 mJ/mg.
