To restrict an applying amount of a lubricant to an area on an intermediate transfer belt where the intermediate transfer belt and a secondary transfer roller directly come into contact with each other, to decrease an adhesion amount of the lubricant on the intermediate transfer belt to the secondary transfer roller, and to decrease back staining of a recording medium caused by adhesion of a large quantity of toner and lubricant to the secondary transfer roller and deterioration of secondary transferability caused by variation of electrical resistance of the secondary transfer roller.
The image forming apparatus includes: an endless intermediate transfer member to which a toner image formed on an image carrier is transferred; the lubricant which is applied to the intermediate transfer member; a lubricant applying member which applies the lubricant to the intermediate transfer member; and a transfer device which transfers the toner image on the intermediate transfer member to the recording medium. The applying amount of the lubricant in a contact area, where the transfer device and the intermediate transfer member directly come into contact with each other, out of areas on the intermediate transfer member can be varied to the applying amount of the lubricant in a non-contact area where the transfer device and the intermediate transfer member do not directly come into contact with each other.
