To provide an image forming apparatus for fixing an unfixed toner image on a sheet material in a fixing nip portion formed by a fixing member and a pressure member, which is capable of preventing the contamination of the pressure member with toner, thereby suppressing the staining of the sheet material, and suppressing the occurrence of a jam.
The image forming apparatus includes a photoreceptive drum 1, a transfer roller 6 and a fixing unit 7 and fixes a toner image on the sheet material in the fixing nip portion, in such a state that an electric field capable of allowing an electrostatic force in a direction from a fixing film 50 to a pressure roller 40 to act on charged toner constituting the toner image transferred on the sheet material P is formed. The image forming apparatus has a cleaning mode in which a sheet material charging process for applying a voltage having the same polarity as that of the toner to the transfer roller 6 and allowing the sheet material P charged to the same polarity as that of the toner to pass through the fixing nip portion is performed when an image is not formed after the image forming apparatus is installed, so that extraneous matter charged to the polarity reverse to that of the toner can be removed from the surface of the fixing film 50.
