The image forming apparatus comprises a guide member 90 configured such that while the leading end of the guide member 90 itself is disposed opposite, via a predetermined gap, to a nip upstream part P1, which is a part near the entrance of a secondary transfer nip of an intermediate transfer belt 16, a recording sheet P fed by a resist roller pair 32 is brought into contact with the belt counter face of the leading end of the guide member 90 itself and is guided toward the nip upstream part P1. The leading end of the guide member 90 is located nearer to the belt side than a second imaginary straight line L2 passing through the nip entrance and orthogonal to a first imaginary straight line L1 connected to the belt curvature center in a secondary transfer nip and the curvature center of a secondary transfer roller 20. At least during a period right after a recording sheet P is made to enter the secondary transfer nip, the resist roller pair 32 is driven at a linear velocity lower than the belt. Thereafter, the linear velocity of the resist roller pair 32 is made equal to that of the belt.
