An image forming apparatus is provided in which a carriage with a printer head is reciprocated in a main scanning direction by a motor and on a sheet carried in a sub-scanning direction, drawing is performed by the printer head. In the apparatus, a motor driving circuit is a bridge circuit including a transistor, and comprises detection resistor inserted between earth of the bridge circuit and earth side transistor, or between electric power source of the bridge circuit and the transistor of the electric power source side; and a detection circuit which detects a rotation direction of the motor from a voltage signal of the detection resistor.
