To provide an image forming apparatus capable of reducing a workload of a user as much as possible as a waste toner recovery part in a toner container does not easily become full even when a recovery amount of waste toner increases.
Waste toner recovered from a photoreceptor drum 1 by a cleaning device 7 is stored in a toner container 5 via a buffer container 20 which is attachable to/detachable from an image forming apparatus body. When a toner remaining quantity level in a development device 4 becomes L1 or less, a control unit 90 determines that supply toner in the toner container 5 is empty, and executes a write test to an IC chip 27 mounted at the toner container 5 by using a reader/writer module 30. The control unit 90 determines whether the write test is correctly successful or not, and if it is successful, it sends a control signal to a spiral drive motor 31, rotatably drives a second spiral 23b together with a first spiral 23a, and starts the transfer of waste toner from the buffer container 20 to the toner container 5.
