A necessary and sufficient reduction magnification for obtaining the synthetic copies of the number of placed documents is decided by the document size, the paper size and the number of the placed documents, so that reduced copying is performed. For instance, in the case of performing the reduced synthetic copying of four A4-sized documents into one A4-sized document, exposure processing is not performed for the placed document, and the placed document is temporarily fed to a second document placing part from a first document placing part, and the number of the documents is recognized by a document integrating counter 95. Then, the document at the second document placing part is reset at the first document placing part again, and desired synthetic copying is performed. Then, information from a document side detecting means 93, a paper size detecting means 94 and the counter 95 is fetched into a RAM 87 at any time.
