Abstract:
To provide an image forming apparatus that can read the size of a print sheet without using a special reading sensor.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises: a conveying unit that conveys a recording medium along a conveyance path; an image forming unit that forms an image on the recording medium based on image data; a reflection type optical sensor for image density adjustment; an image density adjustment unit that adjusts image density based on a result of detection performed by the reflection type optical sensor; and a control unit. The reflection type optical sensor is opposite to a photoreceptor with the conveyance path therebetween. The control unit causes the reflection type optical sensor to irradiate a patch toner image with light, causes the image density adjustment unit to adjust image density based on reflected light of the light, controls the conveying unit and the reflection type optical sensor during image formation and causes the reflection type optical sensor to irradiate the recording medium with light at the timing when a predetermined leading end area of the recording medium passes, and based on reflected light of the light, determines whether the width in a main scanning direction of the recording medium is longer than a predetermined reference width.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
