PURPOSE: To prevent the decrease in contrast in the stage of opening or closing a shutter by providing a capacitor for charge accumulation between the drain electrode of a thin film transistor and the transparent electrode in a shutter aperture part and assuring the effective value of the voltage to be impressee to a liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: A TFT (thin film TR) is formed of a semiconductor layer 2, a source electrode 3, a drain electrode 4, a gate electrode 5 and a gate insulating film 7 on a transparent substrate 1a. A transparent segment electrode 18 and a conductive film 11 for forming the capacitor are interposed therein. A common electrode 8 and a light shielding film 10 are provided to the electrode 1b. The upper side in the laminated part of both transparent electrodes 1a, 1b is covered with oriented films 9a, 9b and the liquid crystal 20 is sealed therebetween to form one shutter. Polarizing plates 21, 22 are disposed at crossed nicols on the outside of the substrates 1a, 1b. The films 9a, 9b are oriented in the direction 45° to the upper and lower polarizing plates. The capacitor Ce for charge accumulation is formed of the film 11, the electrode 18 and a dielectric layer 6a. The decrease in the contrast in the stage of opening or closing the shutter is thus prevented.
