To provide an image information extraction apparatus which extracts an image of an object by inexpensive and accurate removal of a background.
A CPU 14 calculates the luminance gradient of a reference image stored in a memory 13 and an input image inputted thereafter from a camera 11 by spatial differential of image information on the reference image and that of the input image. The CPU 14 divides the reference image and the input image into small regions larger than pixels constituting the reference image and the input image and calculates the histogram of the luminance gradient of each small region. The CPU 14 calculates difference information on the basis of the similarity between the histogram of the reference image and that of the input image and extracts the image.
