To provide an image input device and an image input method capable of quickly detecting a failure of a touch pen in an input device using an electromagnetic induction method or an electrostatic coupling method for keeping high operationality.
This input device including a display and the touch pen for touching a display to input information outputs a detection signal, which includes a pen switch signal for showing the ON/OFF of a pen switch in the touch pen and a coordinate signal for showing the coordinates indicated by the touch pen on the display or coordinate unspecific information for representing the fact of no detection of any coordinate when no coordinate is detected, to a PC included in the image input device. The PC receiving the detection signal from the input device determines that the touch pen is kept in an ON condition even though the touch pen does not touch the display, that is, determines a failure of the touch pen (S310) when the pen switch signal shows pen switch ON (S300: YES) and the coordinate signal shows the coordinate unspecific information (S305: NO).
