An image pick-up device picks up an object image in response to input of shutter operation. In the case of half-pushing of a shutter button, a determination is made whether or not photometric processing is required for capturing an object image, with reference to exposure information immediately before half-pushing including the brightness information and exposure conditions of a subject, and on the basis of the reference exposure information and a program diagram P2 (program diagram for object image). The program diagram P2 defines the relation of the subject luminance value and exposure conditions in a predetermined exposure linkage range. When the subject luminance value derived from the reference exposure information is within the exposure linkage range, photometric processing is performed and an exposure control values (aperture, shutter speed and photographic sensitivity) are set from the results (step S16), but when it deviates from the exposure linkage range, photometric processing is not performed but the exposure control values are set from the reference exposure information (step S17).
