An image pickup apparatus 1, when emitting a flash 22 to take a still picture, displays information representing a flash arrival area, or an area where the flash light arrives and a subject (an object) is reflected, superposed on, for example, a through-the-lens image, before the photographing. For example, the flash arrival area of the entire through-the-lens image lights or blinks in a predetermined color to be displayed. Which area thereof is the flash arrival area is determined based on a distance to each subject included in a field to be taken, an amount of emitted light of the flash 22, and the like. In other words, the image pickup apparatus 1 determines the flash arrival area without performing a prior light emission. The present invention can be applied to devices such as digital still cameras having imaging functions.
