To provide an image pickup apparatus for improving user friendliness by adaptively switching zooming depending on the type of an exchange lens, the presence or absence of a zoom lens and an operation mode as to whether static image pickup or motion image pickup.

There is provided the image pickup apparatus to which a first lens capable of motorized zooming and a second lens not capable of motorized zooming can be detachably mounted. The image pickup apparatus includes: a first operation section for controlling zoom processing; and a control section which, when the first lens is mounted, conducts optical zoom processing for controlling a zoom lens of the first lens based on an operation of the first operation section, and when the second lens is mounted, conducts electronic zoom control for changing a cut-out range of a picked-up image based on an operation of the first operation section.
