An image pickup device is designed to generate a composite image by concatenating a plurality of images one to another. The image pickup device includes: photographing means for photographing the subject under a plurality of exposure conditions; determination means for determining the plurality of exposure conditions; first synthesis means for generating a plurality of first composite images by concatenating one group to another a plurality of per-group images, one group consisting of images which are the same in the exposure conditions among a plurality of images photographed by the photographing means under each of the exposure conditions determined by the determination means; and second synthesis means for generating one instance of a second composite image having an extended dynamic range by combining the plurality of first composite images generated by the first synthesis means.
