To provide an image pickup device for eliminating the need for lens drive in obtaining information corresponding to an object distance by using image information outputted by an image pickup part.
When a control part 1 discriminates that an image is darker than a prescribed value 1 on the basis of luminance signals in the image information from a CCD camera 4, the luminance signals in the image information inputted from the CCD camera 4 are stored in the state where an LED 9 does not emit light and the LED 9 is made to emit the light in a prescribed light quantity. The control part 1 stores the luminance signals in the image information outputted from the CCD camera 4 at that time and obtains a luminance difference of the two luminance signals. The LED 9 is made to emit the light with a light quantity 1 (maximum light quantity, for instance) in the case that the obtained luminance difference is the prescribed value 2 or less, the LED 9 is made to emit the light with the light quantity 2 (light quantity 1 > light quantity 2) in the case that the obtained luminance difference is larger than the prescribed value 2 and is the prescribed value 3 (prescribed value 2 < prescribed value 3) or less, the LED 9 is made to emit the light with the light quantity 3 (light quantity 2 > light quantity 3) in the case that the obtained luminance difference is larger than the prescribed value 3 and still image photographing is performed.
