PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the image pickup system using an electronic camera in which an object is picked up without delay to obtain a video signal with high quality and power consumption is reduced.
SOLUTION: When a position detection signal 128 is cleared, a controller 28 drives a solid-state image pickup element 10 at a low speed of an interval of 5 fields to sweep out undesired charge stored in a PD and residual charge left in a VCCD so as to bring the element 10 to a pinning state. The power consumption of the camera 5 is reduced by this drive method. When the position detection signal 128 is set, an electronic shutter of the solid-state image pickup element 10 is open based on a clock signal from a shutter signal generator 24 without a delay not synchronously with a vertical synchronizing signal from a synchronizing signal generator 22 so as to sweep out the undesired charge at a high speed and the image charge of an object is stored in the PD. Succeedingly the controller 28 counts a shutter time based on the clock signal and closes the electronic shutter of the solid-state image pickup element 10 based on the shutter time to transfer the image charge stored in the PD to the VCCD and the image charge is read for each line synchronously with the vertical synchronizing signal.
