An image processing apparatus 100 for correcting gray level on image data corresponding to an image to be displayed on a display part 50 by use of a backlight 60 includes: a gray level correction control part 140 which generates second gray level correction characteristics from first gray level correction characteristics on the basis of a correction curve; and a gray level correction part 120 which corrects gray level on the basis of the second gray level correction characteristics. Inclination of a tangent at a gray level 0 of the correction curve is determined based on dimming rate of the backlight 60. The gray level correction control part 140 generates second gray level correction characteristics by changing the gray level characteristics in a predetermined gray level range including a gray level 0 of the first gray level correction characteristics.
