To perform polarization removal processing with higher accuracy by using an image signal having a plurality of different polarization properties obtained through single photographing.SOLUTION: Input of image signals generated by photoelectrically converting a plurality of rays of polarized light different in polarization angle from each other is received, and with a plurality of image signals based on the plurality of rays of polarized light as one set, for each set, the maximum value of the polarization intensities of polarization components of the plurality of image signals and a polarization angle at which the polarization intensity becomes maximum are determined. A target area for which polarization removal is performed is determined based on the image signals; a statistical area included in the target area for collecting statistics is set; and a representative intensity being the mode of the polarization intensities of the sets included in the statistical area and a representative angle being the mode of the polarization angles are obtained. The image signals in the sets included in the target area are corrected according to the polarization angles of the image signals by using the determined representative intensity and representative angle.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
