To provide a technique for refraining from computing evaluation values for detection areas straddling a plurality of regions into which an image is divided.
There is provided an image processing apparatus which includes: acquisition means for acquiring an image signal; setting means for setting a plurality of evaluation areas adapted for calculation of an evaluation value in an image represented by the image signal; division means for dividing the image represented by the image signal into a plurality of divided image regions; and a plurality of calculation means each for acquiring a divided image signal corresponding to an assigned one of the plurality of divided image regions from the division means and calculating evaluation values for a plurality of evaluation areas respectively, on the basis of evaluation area image signals corresponding to the plurality of evaluation areas included in the divided image region, respectively, and in which the plurality of calculation means calculate evaluation values for evaluation areas each of which is completely within any one of the plurality of divided image regions, but do not calculate evaluation values for evaluation areas each of which straddles two or more of the plurality of divided image regions.
