To reduce erroneous detection occurring near an object to be detected and improve detection accuracy.
An image processing apparatus scans a detection window for an input image, determines whether or not an image in the detection window is an object, and outputs object candidates. Then, the apparatus calculates a positional relationship between mutually overlapping object candidates among the object candidates, and determines again whether or not the candidate is the object on the basis of the positional relationship. At that time, the apparatus relatively scans the detection window for the input image in a plurality of sizes when scanning the detection window, selects a set of object candidates which have a predetermined difference of positions and a size ratio when calculating the positional relationship, and determines each set of the selected object candidates again on the basis of the positional relationship between each of the object candidates.
