To provide an image processing device and a control method and program for the same that can avoid discontinuity of an image in composition of a halation area, an intermediate gradation area and a burned area when plural images different in exposure are combined to expand a gradation range.
Plural images different in exposure are obtained and matched in gradation level with one another. Thereafter, pixels at which variation occurs in a subject are detected on the basis of the difference from pixel values among the plural images. Halation and burned pixels in the pixels at which the variation occurs in the subject are counted with respect to the plural images, and an image in which the total of the pixels concerned is equal to the minimum number or an image in which the difference between the total of the pixels concerned and the minimum number is not more than a predetermined threshold value are selected. Furthermore, the subject-varied pixels of the selected image are used as pixels corresponding to the subject-varied pixels in a dynamic-range-expanded image to be generated.
