The image processing apparatus includes: a color compression unit for compressing brightness components and saturation components by a compression ratio of the brightness components and the compression ratio of the saturation components compliant with the hue components of the image data on the basis of the color gamut of an input image and the color gamut of the image output device; a brightness component correction amount calculation unit for calculating the correction amount of the brightness component compliant with the compression ratio of the brightness component for the image data of a given spatial frequency band; a saturation component correction amount calculation unit for calculating the correction amount of the saturation component compliant with the compression ratio of the saturation component for the image data of the given spatial frequency band; a brightness component correction unit for correcting the compressed brightness component using the correction amount of the brightness component; and a saturation component correction unit for correcting the compressed saturation component using the correction amount of the saturation component.
