PURPOSE: To identify an object for which identification is hard in a conventional system without interposing another's hand by collating feature quantity realized in a numeric value with an object feature data base generated in advance.
CONSTITUTION: A size measuring part 3 segments the object from a sent digital color image by applying area division, and measures the length, width, and thickness, etc., of a segmented object area, and extracts the feature quantity with respect to the size of the object. A color detecting part 4 extracts saturation, hue, and chromaticity, etc., as the feature quantity with respect to the color of a surface by applying linear transformation or nonlinear transformation, etc., to physical quantity R, G, and B provided in each picture element of the segmented object area. A pattern recognition part 5 extracts the patterns of the character, brand, and pattern on the surface of the object from the object area, and performs the pattern recognition on the feature quantity of the pattern. An object identification part 6 collates information with respect to each feature quantity and pattern with information accumulated in the object feature data base 8 in advance.
