To correct contrast in accordance with image characteristics of an image to be processed.
An image characteristic detecting part 21 detects the histogram of the luminance of input image data S1, and a correction curve generating part 22 generates a correction curve based on a detection result. A non-linear filter 23 extracts structure components ST1 of the image data S1. A structure correcting part 24 corrects the contrast of the structure components ST1 based on a conversion curve generated by the correction curve generating part 22. On the other hand, a subtracting part 25 subtracts the structure components ST1 from the image data S1, and extracts texture components TX1. An amplifying part 26 amplifies the texture components TX1. An adding part 27 adds the corrected structure components ST2 and the amplified structure components ST2. This invention may be applied to an image processor built in a television receiver for improving the contrast of an edge in an image.
