PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for filling a lumber vessel part with a wood filler and also to extract only the vessel part from the image of a wood grain pattern by applying a differential operation and then the subtraction to two image data which are photographed with illumination given from the directions opposite to each other, smoothing these image data to obtain the new data and binarizing these obtained data.
SOLUTION: Two images which are photographed with illumination given from the right and left directions are fetched by an image processor via an input device 16. A controller 12 reads the data on toe right and left images out or a storage 17 and applies a differential operation to these data to obtain the right and left differential data, and the subtraction is executed between both differential data. Then the controller 12 successively applies the absolute value processing and the gradation processing to those subtracted data and then binarizes the data undergone the gradation processing based on the prescribed threshold. Thus, the vessel image data are obtained via the above binarization processing and temporarily stored in the storage device 17. The controller 12 reads those data out of the storage device 17 and output them to an output device 18 according to the operation of an operator.
