An image processing method includes inputting multi-level data representing a gradation value to a buffer for N rasters, and quantizing a target pixel to be quantized for the multi-level data inputted to the buffer. An error of the quantized pixel is distributed to surrounding non-quantized pixels including a non-quantized pixel in the raster of a pixel quantized prior to the quantized pixel, and the distributed error for the target pixel is added to multi-level data to which quantization is not processed yet. The quantization and the distribution/addition of the error are then repeated while moving the target pixel in a direction of columns. When processing is completed for N pixels in the direction of columns, the target pixel is also moved in a direction of rasters and similar processing is repeated, thereby quantizing multi-level data for the N rasters.
