To provide an image projecting apparatus provided with a reflection type display element for displaying an image by the angle modulation of pixels and capable of effectively separating illumination light from a projection light without using a field lens and a TIR prism.
The deflection axes of pixels of a display element (30) are made parallel with the long side of a display area of the display element (30) and an entrance pupil of a projecting optical system (40) is displaced from a normal on the center of the display area to a direction parallel with the short side of the display area. Further a distance from the display element (30) up to an optical component most close to the display element (30) is determined, based on an intersecting point between the lowest light out of projecting light arriving from the lower end of the display area at the incident pupil of the projecting optical system (40) and the uppermost light out of illumination light arriving from the illuminating optical system (20) to the upper end of the display area.
