The image projection device 100 projects the display image of the reflection type spatial modulation element 5. A projection optical system 4 includes a field lens 41 which is close to the reflection type spatial modulation element 5, condenses light reflected by the reflection type spatial modulation element 5 and constitutes part of an illumination optical system 3 and a first optical system 42 which projects the reflected light condensed by the field lens 41. The illumination optical system 3 includes a second optical system 31 which is provided on the side of an optical path between the field lens 41 and the first optical system 42 and condenses the light from a light source section 1 and a third optical system 32 which is arranged to face the second optical system 31 across the optical path between the field lens 41 and the first optical system 42 and has at least one reflecting surface 32b, to irradiate the reflection type spatial modulation element 5 with the light from the second optical system 31 through the field lens 41.
