To provide an image projector capable of smoothly operating a drive unit even in a subfreezing environment.
In an image projector which comprises: a spatial light modulation element to form an image pattern; an illumination optical system to illuminate the spatial light modulation element; and a projection optical system to project the image pattern, a drive shaft is integrated with an electromechanical conversion element and frictionally engaged with a mirror cell which holds a movable lens in the projection optical system. The image projector also has a drive device to drive the mirror cell along the drive shaft by the displacement of the drive shaft produced by extraction and contraction of the electromechanical conversion element with applied pulse voltage. The drive shaft is arranged between the illumination optical system and the projection optical system.
