PURPOSE: To discriminate whether a document is glossy or not by providing an optical sensor in the vicinity of an image reading part, detecting reflected light from light irradiating a document in a different position, and measuring the degree glossiness of the document.
CONSTITUTION: A photodetecting part 25 and a photodetecting part 26 are placed in one end part of a first mirror unit 12, the photodetecting part 25 is provided in a position for photodetecting the regular reflected light of irradiating light of an exposure lamp 14 for irradiating a document D, and the photodetecting part 26 is provided in a position for photodetecting the irregular reflected light of the document D in the vicinity of a photodetecting slit 27. Their outputs are converted to each image density by logarithmic converting circuits 51A, 51B, respectively, and converted to the degree of glossiness corresponding to two kinds of density from a table contained in a ROM 1. The measurement of this degree of glossiness is executed plural times by a preliminary scan of the document, and the averaged degree of glossiness is determined as the degree of glossiness of the document. When this degree of glossiness is a value being above the reference by referring to the table contained in a ROM 2, a high level signal is sent out to a control part 70. The control part 70 executes selection of a glossy transfer paper, or selection of a fixing device being suitable for the glossy document D, or a change of a color correction coefficient being suitable for the document D.
