Abstract:
To provide an image reader in which a blackout start characteristics is improved, so as to reduce the start time, without the need for revising the structure of an external electrode type fluorescent discharge tube itself.
The image reader has a lamp 105, whose start time becomes longer as the lamp is left in a blackout state for a longer period after extinction. When reading the image of an original illuminated by the lamp 105, a timer 137 measures an extinction period after the lamp 105 is turned off and reaches the blackout state (S3), and when the measured extinction period reaches a prescribed value, e.g. 4 hours, the lamp 105 (S4) is lit to improve its start characteristics.
