PURPOSE: To prolong the use life of a light source and to prevent a display part from becoming difficult to see by providing a light quantity control means which controls the quantity of lighting by the light source according to whether or not there is a transmission of document at a lighting part.
CONSTITUTION: A controller 32 performs control for synchronizing the subscan of a CCD3 line sensor 7 with external equipment 29 and control over the setting of a digital processing circuit 27 and the driving of an automatic changer 5 based upon information from a sensor 16. Then the controller 32 further serves as a light quantity control means which controls the voltage of a DC power source 17 and turns off a halogen lamp 2 or decrease the quantity of lighting less than when an image of a film F is read except when the image of the film F is read to reduce the heat generation and temperature rise of the halogen lamp 2. Consequently, the use life of the light source can be prolonged, an unnecessary image is prevented from being projected, and much light is prevented from irradiating the display part, thereby preventing the display part from becoming difficult to see.
