To provide an image reading apparatus capable of properly reading an image even in an object to be read having a step or the like through a simple work.
The image reading apparatus A1 includes: an image sensor 2 including a photo-detection plane 21 on which a plurality of photo-detection areas disposed in a matrix shape are formed; an optical system 3 for image-forming, on the photo-detection plane 21, light advancing from the side of a reading object Dc; and a case 4 including an open end 42a at the side of the reading object Dc, for internally housing and holding the image sensor 2 and the optical system 3. The case 4 includes a hood 42 covering the reading object Dc separately from the outside while the reading object Dc is pressed with an end 42b at a side of the open end 42a, and the hood 42 includes a scattering and transmitting part 425 for scattering and transmitting external light.
