A compound machine selects four states of A to D required to determine whether a feeding path and document feeding are proper or not from eight states achieved depending on the opened state and closed state of each of a reading unit, a document feeding unit, and a cover member. The four states are assigned to four states achieved by the on/off of a first switch and a second switch. This allows for detecting the opened and closed states of the reading unit, the document feeding unit, and the cover member on the basis of the first switch and the second switch, and determining whether a feeding path and document feeding are proper or not.
