Abstract:
To suppress or avoid on the basis of application of ultrasonic sensor an occurrence of jamming of medium with a fold or a wrinkle by determining whether a conveyed medium being a single sheet or multiple sheets and detecting, in the case where the medium is a single sheet, whether the fold and the wrinkle being present or absent in the medium.SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus includes: a feed roller 14 for feeding a sheet P toward a reading unit 20; and a medium detecting unit 30 consisting of a transmitting unit 31 provided in a conveying path between the feed roller 14 and a reading unit 20 for transmitting ultrasonic wave, and a receiving unit 32 for receiving the ultrasonic wave transmitted from the transmitting unit 31 to output an output value corresponding to the received ultrasonic wave. Conveying of the sheet P is continued when the output value of the receiving unit 32 satisfies a first condition, and conveying of the sheet P is stopped when the output value of the receiving unit 32 satisfies one of a second condition different from the first condition and a third condition different from the second condition.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
